A Text Message Scam is Targeting New York Drivers

In the last few days, thousands of New Yorkers have received suspicious text messages from someone claiming to represent the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

The messages read something like this:

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on May 24.

Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. In accordance with New York State Administrative Code 15C-16.003, if you do not complete payment by May 24, 2025, we will take the following actions:

  1. Report to the DMV violation database
  2. Suspend your vehicle registration starting May 23
  3. Suspend driving privileges for 30 days

Ignore these messages. They are not legitimate.

The New York DMV will never send you an unsolicited text message.

Always be wary of notices that claim to be "final." For a notice to be final, it must be preceded by other notices.

There's no such thing as "New York State Administrative Code 15C-16.003." And the website link has nothing to do with the DMV. New York State DMV web addresses always begin with "dmv.ny.gov."

If you receive this message, you have no need to panic and no need to contact our office. Just ignore the text and move along with your life. If you click the links, you run the risk of being scammed or stolen from.

Be well and drive safe,
