School Zone Traffic Tickets in New York

A school speed limit – also known as a school zone – applies to areas where there is a school or day care facility.

Since there are many children in and around New York schools when classes are in session, motorists are required to drive at slower speed limits when passing through a school zone. Lower school zone speed limits apply during school days, generally between the hours of 7 AM and 6 PM.

The penalties for speeding in a school zone are serious. The exact penalties are based on the rate of speed that the driver traveled at the time of the violation.

The following is a breakdown of school zone traffic violation fines according to speed:

  • One (1) to ten (10) miles per hour (mph) over the speed limit – Punishable by a fine between $90 and $300 (not including a surcharge and other fees)

  • 11 to 30 mph over the speed limit – Punishable by a fine between $180 and $600 (not including a surcharge and other fees)

  • 31 mph or more over the speed limit – Punishable by a fine between $360 and $1,200 (not including a surcharge and other fees)

The points associated with this traffic violation include:

  • 1 – 10 mph over the speed limit – Three (3) points on your driving record

  • 11 – 20 mph over the speed limit – Four (4) points

  • 21 – 30 mph over the speed limit – Six (6) points

  • 31 – 40 mph over the speed limit – Eight (8) points

  • 40 mph or more over the speed limit – 11 points

Furthermore, a conviction for speeding in a school zone in New York can also lead to increases in your auto insurance premiums. According to several studies, a single speeding ticket can result in a 30-percent rise in a driver’s insurance rates.
