Speeding in a New York Work Zone

Workers who build and repair roads, barriers, and bridges are exposed to traffic conditions while on the job. In order to keep these roadside workers safe, speed limits within a designated work area are generally slower than other areas on a road or highway.

Studies show that driving at high speeds in work zones has caused a substantial number of fatalities of construction workers and even the drivers who caused these accidents. That is why speeding in a work zone will cost more than your average ticket.

The following is a breakdown of work zone traffic violation fines according to speed:

  • Between one (1) and ten (10) miles per hour (mph) – Punishable by a fine between $90 and $150 (not including a surcharge and other fees)

  • Between 11 and 30 mph – Punishable by a fine between $180 and $300 (not including a surcharge and other fees)

  • 31 mph or more – Punishable by a fine between $360 and $600 (not including a surcharge and other fees)

The points associated with this traffic violation include:

  • Between 1 and 10 mph over the speed limit – Three (3) points on your driving record

  • Between 11 and 20 mph over the speed limit – Four (4) points

  • Between 21 and 30 mph over the speed limit – Six (6) points

  • Between 31 and 40 mph over the speed limit – Eight (8) points

  • 40 mph or more over the speed limit – 11 points

In addition, getting convicted for speeding in a school zone in New York can also result in increases in your auto insurance premiums. In fact, a single speeding ticket can lead to a 30-percent rise in a driver’s insurance rates.

Lastly, if you are convicted of two violations of speeding in a work zone within the span of 18 months, then the second offense carries license revocation.
